Mondrian Seoul

After a tense journey from Jeju, unsure if we’d make it for dinner, we finally reached Mondrian Seoul. The taxi ride from the domestic airport to Itaewon took over an hour, but the warm atmosphere made the trip worthwhile. Now, let’s explore the standout features of this remarkable hotel.

Design: I’ve always been a fan of Mondrian hotels for their innovative designs, and Mondrian Seoul certainly lived up to my expectations. Although it didn’t quite reach the exquisite beauty and uniqueness of, say, the Mondrian in Doha, the hotel still impressed. The lobby was a visual delight, resembling an art gallery with swings, captivating paintings, a charming garden, and modern furniture. Vibrant colors like greens, pinks, and blues added a lively touch, making the entire hotel a showcase of modern art and stylish designs.

Descending via escalators from the main entrance led us to an area with a food court and more captivating art. Although we missed the opportunity to sample the food court offerings, the variety looked intriguing. The entire hotel is an artistic haven, with every corner adorned with carefully curated pieces.

Dining: As you step in, a stylish bar catches your eye, accompanied by several restaurants within the hotel. Unfortunately, due to our limited time in Itaewon, we missed out on trying these options. Instead, we wanted to venture beyond the hotel and explore more of Itaewon and Seoul, discovering different experiences.

Still, Mondrian Seoul is known for its diverse culinary offerings, ranging from sophisticated international cuisine to delightful local flavors.

Rooftop bar: Now, onto our experience at the rooftop bar. The rooftop bar exuded modern elegance, even though the outdoor area was closed during our early April visit. We learned they opened it a few weeks later. The indoor space, however, was inviting and attracted people from various countries, as well as locals from Korea. While the drinks were excellent, we were slightly disappointed with the Wagyu burger sliders—perhaps our taste buds were still tingling from the exquisite 3-star Michelin experience at Mosu. Additionally, it would have been more enjoyable if the bartenders could showcase their creativity by making custom drinks based on personal preferences. Despite this, the drinks on the menu were very good, reaffirming our belief in the bartenders’ skill, but as someone who enjoys the artistry of mixology, I usually prefer exploring unique creations.

Rooms: Regarding the rooms at the Mondrian, we were fortunate to get a higher floor with a lovely city view. However, it’s worth mentioning that the rooms are on the smaller side, especially when compared to the three hotels we experienced in Jeju. This was something I anticipated, having done research prior to booking, so it wasn’t a surprise. The bed was generously sized and comfortable, though there was limited space for our luggage. The bathroom integrated into the room, with the sink adding a stylish touch, but again, space was limited, leaving little room for all my toiletries. While I might not recommend this hotel for an extended stay, it’s perfect for a short visit, especially for those who travel light. The room itself was vibrant, beautiful, and showcased a modern design.”

Pool: Another notable feature of this hotel is its two pools—an outdoor and an indoor pool. Unfortunately, we missed the chance to experience the outdoor pool, as it was closed for the season. It reopened a few weeks later, and I’m a bit disappointed we couldn’t enjoy it. The outdoor pool area looked inviting, complete with a pool bar.

Nevertheless, we did try the indoor pool. While the area was pleasant, the pool was more suitable for swimming than relaxing, and the water was a bit colder than I prefer. Wearing a cap was mandatory, so we decided to skip the pool when we were informed we couldn’t swim without one. I’m not a fan of caps; they bring back memories of swimming lessons from elementary school, and the cap was quite uncomfortable, feeling like it was pulling off all my hair when taken off—definitely not a pleasant association.

Fortunately, we were at least permitted to enter the jacuzzi without a cap, and the water there was much warmer!

Ideal Location: Lastly, Mondrian Seoul’s location, just a 10-minute walk from vibrant bars and restaurants in Itaewon, made it an ideal choice. Itaewon, a exciting area that I’ll share more about in upcoming posts, was the primary reason for our selection. Additionally, the renowned Mosu restaurant, which I’ll delve into later, is also nestled in Itaewon. Stay tuned for more insights into our adventures in this lively district!

From Jeju to Seoul with business class

In the morning, we took a final walk through Jeju’s streets, making our way to the renowned arboretum park. Although time was limited due to our impending flight, we managed to glimpse the beginning of the park. The last walk was a long but idyllic journey, revealing the beauty of Jeju’s nature for the last time—lush green landscapes, fallen cherry blossom petals on trees, and a stone path, adorned with tiny stones meant for barefoot walking, tempting us to experience its therapeutic benefits, although we resisted the temptation.

As we headed to the airport, it was bustling with people. We spent a brief period in the Asiana Lounge before going through security, only to find minimal offerings—a disappointment as I had hoped for more food and drinks, but all we found were a few cookies and some non-alcoholic refreshments. We didn’t stay there long and proceeded through security.

Despite the long queues and the crowded airport, we eventually boarded the plane, marking my first experience in business class on a larger aircraft—a somewhat amusing realization, considering my frequent travels. While I’ve been in domestic business class before, this was a different experience altogether. When it comes to the business class itself, Asiana Airlines’ business class seats on large planes redefine the travel experience. These seats are designed for ultimate comfort, allowing passengers to recline them all the way down, providing a luxurious and restful sleeping experience—perfect for me as I am 182 cm or 6ft tall. Too bad the flight time was only 55 minutes. Despite the comfortable seats, there were no other business class amenities; we received no alcohol or food, only alcohol-free drinks like juice. But I didn’t complain; to me, the seats were what made my experience. It’s not like the SAS domestic flight business class that has the same seats throughout the whole flight; these seats resemble those in international airplanes, with the unique feature that they only let you pass when you are on the way out of your flight. So yes, it was quite an adventure.

Upon arrival, we found ourselves in a rush. Despite my initial assumption that getting from the plane to the hotel and restaurant would be straightforward, it took over an hour during rush hour to travel from the domestic airport to Itaewon! Note this for your plans.

Our stay was at the Mondrian Hotel, and with just around 15 minutes to spare, we quickly left our luggage to make our way to Mosu, a 3-star Michelin restaurant we had prebooked and prepaid for—we couldn’t afford to miss it. Ultimately, we arrived about 10 minutes behind schedule, causing a bit of concern as punctuality is typically crucial in such establishments. Fortunately, it all worked out, and I’ll delve deeper into our Mosu restaurant experience and the Mondrian Hotel in the upcoming posts.

Jeju City Day 2: A Night to Remember

In the evening, with the uncertainty of our next day’s flight hanging over us, we set out into the darkened streets, already weighed down by the day’s challenges and the question of whether we would even leave the island. We began our evening by strolling through the vibrant streets of Shin Jeju. This area exuded a lively atmosphere with numerous bars, restaurants, and bustling crowds—a cool and inviting vibe. Without much pre-planning, we decided to spontaneously explore the night, hopping from one bar to another, eager to experience the variety that Shin Jeju had to offer.

Our first stop was a corner bar where we enjoyed a beer and pizza. Although not crowded, the place had a cool ambiance. Not lingering for too long, we continued our quest, now in search of a live music bar. However, the ones we found were either empty or didn’t feature live music that evening. As we walked along the streets, we noticed some places called business clubs with logos featuring women. Curious, we tried to go in, but the doors were locked with a code. I’m still unsure about the nature of these business clubs. Despite the high number of them in Jeju City and the potential association with adult entertainment suggested by the logos and the information I have gathered, it’s still very confusing, especially considering that adult entertainment is illegal in Korea.

We stumbled upon a unique bar in a cellar. We opted to have a drink here, and that’s when we discovered the nature of this establishment—it was a cat bar. Cats roamed freely, displaying a surprising level of tameness and curiosity. They walked on the bar, hopped onto our knees, and cuddled, almost as if they were the true owners of the place. It was amusing to see people sitting there as if it was normal for cats to roam around.A lthough the drinks were enjoyable, we only stayed for one because we were eager to explore as much as possible.

I always wanted to try karaoke in Korea, and while we were still searching for a live music venue, we stumbled upon a karaoke place. However, it wasn’t the typical karaoke spot with young people in private rooms. Instead, it was a karaoke venue with a live band, featuring Koreans over 50 years old. Immediately, we were invited to take a seat at a table, and it seemed like everyone there knew each other. Despite limited English, they were incredibly welcoming.

People took turns getting up on stage to sing, while the rest danced along to the Korean tunes. They brought us a generous fruit and snack plate and inquired about our drink preferences. My partner asked for whiskey and got a whole bottle, and I received a huge bottle of rice wine. It was an interesting setup, and we weren’t sure if we would pay by the glass or by the bottle, especially since the rice wine bottle wasn’t even full and served in a Ballentine’s bottle. .

Feeling a bit shy at first, after a few drinks, we joined the others in dancing. Surprisingly, we even ended up on stage singing two songs, and fortunately, they had English songs available. It was amusing to see everyone dancing to our singing, filming us, creating a fun and unique atmosphere. After a while, more food arrived, including an egg sunny side up. Eventually, we decided to continue our adventure. The bill turned out to be a bit high, presumably because they charged us for everything, but the experience was undoubtedly worth every penny.

After this, we continued walking and encountered even more music. Intrigued, we followed the sound to discover a massive nightclub. Upon entering, everyone was welcoming, making it another interesting place to explore. Once again, we received a fruit plate, and we later learned that this is a common practice before presenting the bill.

Intriguingly, we observed a procedure where girls were led by a staff member, seemingly against their will, and swiftly seated at a table with guys. This seemed disturbing and confusing to us, but we later discovered it’s a dating approach, with girls supposed to act as if they don’t want to join the guys.

We even made some friends at the club, including a guy who kept buying us beer. To our surprise, he turned out to be a police officer. Strangely, he didn’t want us to pay for his drinks—a stark contrast to how things work in Norway.

The entertainment at this place began with a DJ enthusiastically hyping up the crowd. Suddenly, a talented K-pop band took the stage, delivering a performance that felt like a live concert—they were seriously good! The music continued with DJs, creating an energetic atmosphere with lots of people dancing and a fantastic light show. It was genuinely a fun place. After a while, however, we decided to leave to avoid getting home too late.

We made a quick stop at McDonald’s, a personal tradition of mine to sample the local variations. It was surprisingly delicious, even the mozzarella sticks were good, and the shrimp burger had so much flavor.

From there, we were on our way, but I couldn’t resist convincing my partner to check out the Grand Hyatt Hotel on the way. It was a Vegas-style hotel, and I really wanted him to explore such a place as he had never been to one before. It was huge with beautiful interiors, food courts, restaurants, and shops—closed, of course. But the casino was open, and that didn’t take much convincing for my partner. So, we sat at the blackjack table, and guess what, we actually won. Fortunately, I was able to say stop when it was time to leave. Following that, we made our way back to the hotel. It was the right moment to call it a night, considering our plans for the next day.

Although our night out was longer than anticipated, the unexpected adventures and vibrant experiences made it worthwhile. This marked the conclusion of our Jeju adventure.

Jeju City Day 2: An Unexpected Extended Adventure

Our plan was to catch a morning flight to Busan, intending to spend one night there and then take the train to Seoul the following day. I was particularly excited about experiencing the train journey to Seoul, reminiscent of the famous “Train to Busan” but in the opposite direction. However, our Busan escapade took an unexpected turn due to the persistently bad weather we had encountered the previous day in Jeju Downtown. The conditions worsened, resulting in the cancellation of not just our flight but all departures from the island, creating a chaotic situation.

With no choice but to check out from our current hotel, which, despite being nice and budget-friendly, posed a challenge with its firm beds, we embarked on a stroll to find a place to eat and strategize our next steps. Along the way, we sought out a store resembling Seven Eleven to purchase plastic ponchos to shield ourselves from the relentless rain and wind. An elderly Korean lady, despite not speaking English, graciously assisted us in donning the ponchos and even fashioned covers for our backpacks.

Eventually, we stumbled upon a restaurant, its bustling atmosphere piquing our interest. Discovering that they only had one item on the menu—a beef stew with noodles—we decided to give it a try. The meal turned out to be amazing, providing a comforting break from the unexpected turn of events. During our time there, we also secured accommodation for the following night by carefully reviewing hotel reviews to ensure a comfortable night’s sleep.

Given the additional day unexpectedly granted in Jeju City, we seized the opportunity to explore the upscale and touristy side of the city: Shin Jeju. This decision proved to be a delightful turn of events, allowing us to make the most of our extended stay on this vibrant island.

We arrived at the hotel, a typical 4-star establishment adhering to international standards. However, the room exceeded expectations—it was spacious, the bed was expansive and exceptionally comfortable. Situated on a high floor, we enjoyed a captivating view. The bathroom, as is common in Korea, featured a toilet seat heater. The hotel’s location proved to be highly convenient, within walking distance to an array of restaurants, shops, and nightlife establishments.

Notably, the area stood out as distinctly different from Jeju Downtown.Driving to the hotel, we could see that the surroundings were more colorful, adorned with vibrant lights, and had a more upscale vibe.

Before heading out, we faced challenges with flight cancellations, causing concerns that we might be stranded on the island. All our booked flights were getting canceled, and the available ones were fully booked. Ultimately, the only available ticket to Seoul was a business class ticket, and surprisingly, it was the most affordable business class fare I had ever come across. It’s worth noting that we had to go straight to Seoul instead of Busan because we had a special dinner booked. I’ll delve into the details of that in a later post. For now, stay tuned for the next post, which will focus on the nightlife in Shin Jeju. It was quite an experience, deserving its own spotlight.

Downtown Jeju

After enjoying two nights at the lovely Jeju Lotte Hotel, we had one more night in Jeju. For our last night, we opted to stay in downtown Jeju, closer to the airport, to explore what Jeju City had to offer. Jeju City has two parts: Shin Jeju, known for its modern and touristy vibe with fancy hotels and upscale shops, and Jeju Downtown. We chose downtown Jeju to experience the famous Dongmun Market and the more authentic side of Jeju.

Despite the generally reliable bus connections with frequent departures, we encountered inaccuracies in the schedules presented on Google Maps. It is recommended to validate the correct timings either with the hotel staff or by using Kakao Maps. Unfortunately, the bus did not have a direct route to our hotel, necessitating our disembarkation at the hospital, followed by a short cab ride to reach our chosen accommodation.Opting for a budget hotel, with the awareness that our time there would be limited, our primary focus was on exploring the city.

Securing a taxi turned out to be quite an experience. In contrast to the helpful Koreans in Seoul, who, despite limited English, were willing to assist, the people in Jeju were not as inclined to offer help. The initial taxi driver faced difficulties locating the hotel using the GPS, seemingly due to an error in the Korean address provided by Booking.com. Consequently, he advised us to disembark, necessitating the search for another taxi. Encountering a similar issue, we were fortunate that the hotel address was also available in English. Employing my modest Korean pronunciation skills, I communicated the street name, leading us to our destination—an intriguing hotel.

Upon arrival, we discovered a peculiar setting—a hallway and a tiny empty lobby with signs scattered everywhere. Although an hour early for check-in, we left our luggage and explored the town, discovering the nearby area, walking the streets, and finding the market. Jeju City offered a distinctive experience, presenting an authentic and not excessively modern atmosphere. The atmosphere seemed a bit dull, probably due to the gloomy weather.

Upon returning to the hotel at 3 pm for check-in, I reached out to the hotel via Booking.com. Two friendly women appeared from a room located at the end of the hall. They were curious about who we were and offered helpful information about evening destinations. The room, while simple, was clean, appeared new, and even featured a laundry machine. The only drawback was the bed, which proved to be quite firm. Nonetheless, we left our luggage and proceeded to explore the city further.

The weather wasn’t ideal, and the city seemed less populated, with few tourists except at the market. Dongmun Market was a vast and diverse experience, with everything from household items to seafood, spices, and street food. The lobster sellers stood out, using fire to fry lobsters while dancing to techno music. The market’s scale was overwhelming, and I longed to taste every dish available.

After the market, we headed towards the sea, hoping to find a beach but discovering only a port. Along the water, there were many restaurants, yet everything appeared empty, with few people around. Despite closures, we visited a Japanese restaurant recommended by the two Korean ladies at the hotel. Ordering through iPads, we tried a variety of dishes—noodle soups, sushi, and deep-fried snacks—all delicious, accompanied by Korean soju.

Exploring the area behind the restaurant, it looked like a shopping street, but most shops seemed closed—possibly due to low season or weather. Nonetheless, strolling through this part of town was delightful, with intriguing streets, vibrant houses, and even a beautiful temple. On our way back to the hotel, we stumbled upon small houses adorned with hearts, igniting curiosity about their purpose. Could they be brothels? The notion crossed my mind, but considering the illegality of such establishments in Korea, the mystery persisted.

Finally, reaching the hotel, we went to bed early as we had an early flight to catch the next morning. Or so we thought (see next post).

Jeju Lotte Hotel

Arriving at the beautiful Lotte Hotel, the first thing that caught our eye as we approached the resort was the sight of a massive, stunning property that reminded us of the luxurious resorts in the Middle East. The allure of the hotel was evident even from a distance. Once inside, we were greeted by the breathtaking sea view from the lobby. I’ve already shared the details of our smooth transfer to the hotel in my previous post.

Rooms: When we reached our room, we were relieved to find that it was ready for us. Although we didn’t have a sea view, the garden view room we had booked was equally beautiful, and we thoroughly enjoyed the spaciousness it offered. The room, though somewhat old-fashioned, had charming wicker furniture that gave it a tropical feel. However, I couldn’t help but wonder about the newly renovated rooms and the adorable Hello Kitty themed rooms they offered. It was tempting to book one of those, but since they fell under the “family room” category, we didn’t want to deprive a family of the opportunity to experience the cute and themed accommodations.

Pool: Without a doubt, the pool area was the highlight of this hotel for me. It was a paradise of relaxation! The pool was heated to around 30 degrees Celsius, providing a warm and comfortable swimming experience regardless of the weather. Surrounded by vibrant flowers, lush trees, and greenery, the pool area exuded serenity. I particularly enjoyed the jacuzzis, which offered even warmer water to unwind in. Additionally, the pool area featured a sauna, creating a perfect escape for relaxation. Although the pool wasn’t outdoor, the sauna’s presence was a welcome touch.

Entertainment: Entertainment at the hotel was centered around the pool, adding a unique touch to the experience. A stage was set up behind the pool, allowing guests to enjoy the shows while remaining in the water. To my surprise, the entertainment was top-notch! The singers were truly amazing, and their performances left a lasting impression. I can’t forget the two talented guys singing “Piano Man” in an opera version; it was a remarkable moment. All the singers, both Korean and English, delivered captivating performances, making it one of the highlights of our stay at Lotte Hotel.

Beach: As we explored the beach area, we discovered that swimming wasn’t allowed due to the strong currents. Signs indicated the presence of sharks, raising uncertainty about whether this was a factual reason or merely a tactic to discourage entry, possibly overshadowing the threat of strong currents. Despite these concerns, the beach offered breathtaking views. Situated on a cliff, our hotel provided a picturesque vantage point, allowing us to marvel at the stunning scenery below.

Dining: The hotel’s buffet restaurant was a culinary treat, featuring a variety of delicious dishes. From freshly made sushi to a range of Asian and European flavors, the restaurant had something for everyone. The buffet had a variety of delicious options, including abalone, scallops, and lobster tails, alongside other unique seafood dishes that showcased a rich diversity of flavors. Additionally, the famous black pork and a selection of shrimp dishes were available, offering a wide range of choices. In my view, the abalone was somewhat firmer than expected, leading to a bit of disappointment based on its reputation. However, every other aspect of the culinary experience exceeded my expectations, especially the perfectly cooked lobster tails. Despite the slightly higher price, the experience proved worth every penny. To enhance our meal, we treated ourselves to the reasonably priced wine tasting menu, creating a truly memorable dining experience.

Other facilities: The hotel’s bar, while beautifully designed, was too expensive for our budget. We chose not to get drinks at the bar and instead focused on enjoying the other amenities of the hotel. We were happy to find a variety of facilities available, including a casino, gym, and even a Louis Vuitton boutique, adding to the luxury experience

Location: Outside the hotel, the surrounding area had much to offer. We were particularly impressed by the breakfast place, Bamaro, that served amazing bagels, some of the best we’ve ever had.

A beautiful temple area nearby provided a serene escape, featuring a bridge over natural beauty and offering stunning views of waterfalls. Numerous restaurants awaited just outside the hotel, serving Korean, Japanese, and chicken dishes, providing us with plenty of dining options. The convenience of two seven-elevens nearby was an added bonus, making it easy to grab essentials as needed.

We also discovered a beautiful beach bar just a stone’s throw away from the hotel. With its mesmerizing music, inviting atmosphere, and captivating interior, the beach bar was the perfect place to unwind and enjoy the spectacular sunsets with delicious cocktails. Although it wasn’t bustling at night during this off-season period, it was still a charming spot to spend time with loved ones. Other beach bars around were temporarily closed due to the off-season, but we could only imagine how vibrant the area would become during peak times.

With other hotels nearby and numerous attractions within walking distance, we found plenty to explore even without a car. Our two days at Lotte Hotel were packed with adventure and relaxation, making it a memorable experience for us.

In conclusion, our stay at the Lotte Hotel in Jeju was truly enchanting. From the captivating gardens and spacious rooms to the fabulous pool area and top-notch entertainment, it was an experience that surpassed our expectations. The outstanding buffet, beautiful beach views, and the many facilities on offer made our stay even more remarkable. The nearby places also offered lots of delicious food options.

Traveling to Jeju island from Seoul

We woke up early, prepared and excited for our journey to Jeju Island. Known as the “Island of the Gods” or the Hawaii of Korea, Jeju Island boasts a wealth of captivating attractions. Its volcanic landscapes feature iconic sites like Hallasan, the highest mountain in South Korea, and Seongsan Ilchulbong, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
With its pristine beaches, lush forests, stunning coastlines, rich history, vibrant culture, and diverse ecosystems, Jeju Island offers a tropical paradise that appeals to travelers from around the world.

With a flight scheduled for 9:30 am, we quickly grabbed breakfast at the hotel, which started serving at 7 am. Despite our slight eagerness, the buffet staff kindly informed us that it was still a bit early, so we patiently waited for a few minutes. As the clock struck 7 am, all the waitresses and kitchen staff emerged, bowing respectfully and signaling the start of breakfast. It was a charming ritual that added cultural authenticity to our dining experience. The breakfast showcased typical Korean dishes, including rice, soup, sausages, and vegetables—a true reflection of the local cuisine. As an enthusiast of Asian food and Asian breakfasts, I found it to be a perfect start to our day.

After breakfast, we decided to skip the metro and head to the taxi stand. Along the path, we walked past beautiful cherry blossom trees, adding an enchanting touch to our morning. The taxi took us to the domestic airport, where we were surprised by the large number of flights departing for Jeju simultaneously. These were not just small flights; they were like intercontinental flights, complete with spacious business class sections. What surprised me further was the efficiency of the boarding process, which started just 10 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time, yet everything managed to operate effectively and on time. Therefore, arriving early at Jeju’s domestic airport is unnecessary. Unlike other airports with long and tedious waiting times, here the process is incredibly fast, and there isn’t much to do beyond the necessary check-in and security procedures. Our flight with Korean Air was comfortable, and the service provided was satisfactory. The duration of the flight was only one hour, which made the journey convenient and efficient.

Upon arrival in Jeju, we immediately felt the tropical ambiance, as if we had entered a different Korea altogether. Though the temperature wasn’t scorching hot, it was still above 20 degrees Celsius. Exiting the airport, we set out in search of our hotel’s shuttle bus, which provided complimentary service. Finding the designated area proved to be a bit challenging initially, as there were no signs indicating the location of Area B as instructed. We initially assumed it was the buses right outside, but after realizing our mistake, we sought assistance. Despite initial hesitations, we approached a helpful individual who knew exactly where to direct us. As it turned out, Area B was situated on the other side of the expansive airport parking lot, where the large buses were parked. We boarded our designated bus without any issues—a sleek, elegant black bus adorned with the Lotte Hotels logo. With only three other passengers onboard, it felt like a private and luxurious journey. The bus itself was impressive, with exceptionally comfortable wide seats, resembling sofa chairs. They could be reclined fully, and additional amenities such as footrests, wooden shutters, and charging ports enhanced the overall comfort. Our route took us through Jeju City and picturesque countryside, adorned with an abundance of cherry blossom trees and lush greenery—an unexpected sight that challenged our preconceived notions of South Korea.

Finally, we arrived at the Lotte Jeju Hotel, situated in the southern part of Jeju Island. This hotel is a massive paradise-like resort, part of the prestigious Lotte Hotels chain known for its commitment to luxury accommodations and exceptional service. The Lotte Jeju Hotel truly lived up to its reputation, offering a magnificent property with an abundance of amenities and facilities. Stepping into the lobby, we were greeted by a stunning sight. T It was a mesmerizing sight that showcased a different facet of Korea—one that resembled a tropical paradise, filled with both beauty and luxury.

In the next post, I will share more about our amazing experiences at the hotel and in the surrounding area. I’ll talk about the beautiful views of the sea and beach that we enjoyed, as well as the fantastic pool where we spent a lot of time swimming and relaxing in the sun. I’ll also tell you about the great amenities at the hotel, like the comfortable rooms and the delicious food we had, as well as the many interesting things to see and do nearby that made our stay even more memorable!

Evening in Incheon, South Korea

Our first day in Seoul was spent at a budget hotel located between the international and domestic airports. Since we were planning to visit Jeju Island the next day, we opted not to stay in downtown Seoul. This allowed us to experience a different area of the city. After our plane landed around 6 pm, we reached the hotel between 7-8 pm. Our plan was to freshen up and explore the nearby lively Chinatown, as it was a Saturday and we expected plenty of activity. The hotel was conveniently situated right next to a metro station, making it a convenient hub for our travels. Despite the multiple exits at the underground station, we easily found our way.

Tokoyo Inn Inn Bupyeong

Upon exiting the metro, we found ourselves in a bustling mall-like area with an array of food options, including tempting street food stalls. Due to our limited time, we decided to proceed directly to the hotel without stopping to eat. As mentioned, the hotel, called Tokoyo Inn, was a cost-effective choice for our one-night stay. Although the room was relatively small, it fulfilled all our requirements. Surprisingly, it provided additional amenities such as facial cream, facial wash, slippers, and a heated toilet with bidet function. Our room on a high floor offered a pleasant view, and the comfortable bed, along with a humidifier, ensured a restful sleep. As someone who greatly values the comfort of a softer sleeping surface, especially due to my back’s sensitivity to firm beds, I was immensely relieved to discover that the bed in this hotel met my requirements perfectly. After enduring a lengthy and tiring journey, it provided the much-needed respite and ensured a restful night’s sleep. Furthermore, it was a great convenience to have breakfast included as part of our package.

Chinatown

After freshening up and changing, we ventured back to the metro station to explore the supposedly lively Chinatown and savor some street food. Purchasing the metro ticket proved slightly challenging, as most machines required payment in coins, and those accepting cards either malfunctioned or had run out of paper tickets. We had heard that it would be more convenient to buy a metro card and top it up, but even that option was not functioning properly. While we encountered a couple of issues with the ticket, the locals were incredibly friendly and helpful, often offering assistance even when we didn’t request it, despite the language barrier. It was a level of hospitality I had never experienced before. It is important to note that the paper ticket should be kept safe throughout the journey, as it is necessary for exiting the metro. Upon leaving the metro area, we were able to receive a refund for the paper ticket deposit. Although the amount was minimal, it was a convenient process.

Returning to our trip to Chinatown, we boarded the metro and passed several stops, with one particular station, Juan Station, appearing particularly lively. However, we decided to continue to Chinatown and ended up traveling farther than we had anticipated. Fortunately, we didn’t need to change metro lines. As we approached Chinatown, we noticed that the surroundings grew quieter, with fewer people and dimmer lighting. Upon reaching our destination, we realized that Chinatown was closed, which was surprising considering the time was between 9 pm and 10 pm. It seemed that the concept of night markets, as found elsewhere in the world, differed here. Despite the closure, we walked through Chinatown, appreciating its unique charm, even in the absence of open establishments. It appeared that restaurants in Korea closed early, much to our disappointment, as I had been looking forward to trying the dim sum I had been dreaming about. Faced with this setback, we made the decision to return to the metro station and head towards Juan Station, which we had passed earlier and noticed was bustling with activity. Fortunately, the metro was still operational, although we had to wait a while for the train.

Juan Station

Upon reaching Juan Station, our appetites had intensified, and we were in search of a suitable place to satisfy our hunger. We were uncertain about which direction to take in search of a place to eat. Along the way, we encountered several coffee shops that were open 24/7, but unfortunately, they did not serve meals. It became evident that coffee shops are extremely popular in Korea. However, as we continued walking, we were relieved to come across a few restaurants, and I am grateful that we kept going and didn’t settle for the first option we encountered. We continued walking further, and suddenly, we stumbled upon a lively street that fulfilled our expectations for a vibrant evening. The street was lined with restaurants offering barbecue, bars, karaoke establishments, card game rooms, and K-pop reverberating throughout. Colorful Korean signs illuminated the surroundings, creating an immersive experience on our first night in Seoul. It felt like we had walked into a scene straight out of an anime series, with vibrant streets and captivating Korean signs that matched the imagery I had imagined. Though it wasn’t exactly Chinatown, it exuded an unmistakable Korean vibe. Regrettably, our stay here was brief, as we needed to retire early to ensure a restful night’s sleep before our early morning departure to Jeju. Considering the expense of the hotel I had booked in Jeju, I wanted to fully enjoy the experience without the burden of a hangover or excessive tiredness.

(Korean) Barbeque

After strolling through the street and exploring our options, we couldn’t resist the temptation to satisfy our cravings with some mouthwatering Korean barbecue, or obviously just “barbecue” in Korea. It was an incredible culinary experience. I would even venture to say it was the best Korean barbecue I had ever tasted, although my exposure to Korean barbecue outside of Korea had been limited, often lacking authenticity.

The meat offered exceptional flavors, and we tried both the premium and regular cuts. Surprisingly, the cheaper regular meat had a more pronounced and satisfying taste. The menu also featured intriguing options like pigeon, adding to the variety. The accompanying side dishes complemented the meat well and added an extra touch to the dining experience.

It was quite amusing that the restaurant didn’t have an English menu. Instead, they suggested using a translation app to capture photos of the menu and translate it. Unfortunately, I didn’t have access to Wi-Fi or the necessary app at the time. To our surprise, the waiter kindly offered his personal phone, which was in a flip case. Inside the phone case, we discovered not only his phone but also his credit cards and ID cards. It was an interesting glimpse into the level of trust and casual approach to security in this particular place.

We couldn’t resist ordering additional servings. At one point, I had to persuade my partner to refrain from ordering more, as it was time to conclude our lively evening and head back home. By then, it was around midnight, perhaps slightly earlier. I was surprised to observe many locals who were heavily intoxicated, with some girls stumbling about. I had no issue with this; it was merely intriguing to witness such a scene at what I considered to be an early hour. Additionally, numerous people approached us, eager to engage in conversation.

Taxi

Eventually, we returned to the metro station, only to realize that we had missed the last train. Exhausted and annoyed, our intention of an early night’s rest seemed to evade us. Moreover, it was not an ideal situation after a long flight. We resolved to hail a taxi, assuming the cost wouldn’t be exorbitant. However, we didn’t anticipate the length of the taxi line. Although it wasn’t particularly long, with only a few people in front of us, the taxis took an unusually long time to arrive. We waited for approximately an hour, feeling increasingly fatigued and frustrated. Many people around us resorted to booking rides through ride-hailing apps, similar to Uber, but even those options seemed to fail. Eventually, it was our turn to enter a taxi, and to our relief, the fare for the distance was not as steep as we had anticipated. The feeling of relief washed over us as we finally arrived back at our room. As mentioned previously, the bed provided exceptional comfort, allowing us to enjoy a restful night’s sleep despite the jetlag and the early morning departure for Jeju.

Summary

In short, our first day in Seoul was full of excitement. We explored lively streets, enjoyed delicious Korean barbecue, and encountered friendly locals. Despite a few challenges, we found comfort in our cozy hotel and felt welcomed by the city’s charm. It was a memorable start to our Seoul adventure.

Traveling to Korea

Some time ago, I had made plans to visit Japan during Easter to witness the beautiful sakura blossom. I was thrilled to learn that the country had reopened after an extended period of closure due to COVID-19. However, I was taken aback by the high flight prices that accompanied the reopening. The cost of flights to Japan had skyrocketed to $1800 USD, compared to the occasional price of $400 USD before the pandemic. Out of principle, I decided against paying such a hefty sum and began exploring other options. That’s when I discovered Korea, where flights were available at half the price. With the opportunity to experience cherry blossoms in Korea as well, we decided to postpone our Japan trip and head to Korea instead. It turned out to be a decision we did not regret!

Travel itinerary

After carefully considering our travel plans, we settled on visiting several places in Korea: Seoul, Busan, and Jeju Island. We opted to begin our journey with Jeju Island; we landed in Seoul on a Saturday and planned to depart for Jeju on Sunday morning. Instead of opting for a direct flight to Jeju immediately after landing in Seoul, we decided to spend the first night in the city to mitigate the risk of potential delays and missing our flight. This ensured a smooth transition to Jeju the next day. From Jeju, we would fly to Busan for one night before taking the renowned train back to Seoul. Although it wouldn’t be the train “to Busan” like in the movie, we were still excited to experience the journey “from Busan” (sans the zombies, of course).

Istanbul airport

While direct flights were available from Warsaw to Seoul at similar prices, we opted to fly with Turkish Airlines due to more convenient departure times. Our journey included a stopover in Istanbul before our flight to Korea. Upon arrival at Istanbul airport, I was pleasantly surprised. Despite having visited Istanbul and the same airport on multiple occasions, it seemed that we ended up at a new and modern terminal this time. It added to the excitement of our journey.

During our relatively short two-hour stopover in Istanbul, we found a delightful place to eat in a food court that exuded a genuine Turkish ambiance. We opted for a Turkish meat platter and lahmacun, savoring the flavors of authentic Turkish cuisine. The atmosphere transported us to a bustling Turkish city, adding to the charm of our dining experience. However, our enjoyment was short-lived as we suddenly realized that our flight to Korea was already boarding. It was apparent that the boarding process for flights to Korea began earlier than expected, causing us to hurriedly devour our meal in less than a minute. With a sense of urgency, we rushed to the gate, while the flight status on the screen indicated “final call”. Much to our surprise, once we reached the gate, we discovered that we had plenty of time to spare. It seemed we had been misled by the early boarding announcement.

Turkish Airlines

Our flight to Korea was on Turkish Airlines, in economy class. The overall experience was average, with limited legroom and underwhelming service. Regrettably, the provision of alcoholic beverages was limited to a single serving during dinner, while the quality of the food provided failed to impress. The portion sizes, served twice throughout the flight, would have been inadequate for passengers with larger appetites. These observations stand in stark contrast to my previous experiences with Turkish Airlines, which were marked by more enjoyable travel experiences. Presently, it appears that the airline’s commitment to exceptional service is primarily directed towards their business class clientele. While I understand that economy class may not offer the same level of amenities, I still believe that efforts could be made to improve the overall service quality, considering Turkish Airlines’ esteemed reputation.

Landing in Korea

Despite the underwhelming flight, we managed to survive the journey and catch some sleep along the way. Upon arriving at the Korean airport, we were greeted by a modern and aesthetically pleasing terminal. Along one of the walls, a long screen showcased Korean women performing a traditional dance in hanbok, the traditional Korean attire. One of my first encounters was with a friendly elderly woman who approached me, requesting not just a single selfie but an entire photo session using Snapchat, right there in the ladie’s room. She expressed her gratitude afterward, although I couldn’t help but wonder why. Perhaps it was because I am 181 cm, towering over most people in Asia.

We proceeded through passport control and collected our baggage. To my surprise, my suitcase had an electric lock attached, something I had never encountered before. It indicated that I needed to proceed to customs. Curiosity consumed me as I wondered what could have triggered this check. Could it be related to my medication, I worried? As I pondered, anxiety started to creep in about the legality of my medicines in Korea. However, it turned out that the customs officers had scanned my luggage and noticed my YSL bag. They simply wanted to ascertain whether it was newly purchased, potentially subject to tax, or if it was a used item. They quickly realized it was used, evidenced by its slightly dirty interior, and we shared a laugh before I was allowed to proceed.

Train and metro to the hotel

We made our way to the airport train, which involved a short walk. Stepping out of the airport arrival hall, we were immediately transported to a completely different world.K-pop music filled the air, large screens showcased Korean cultural icons, and the surroundings were adorned with Korean script. Vending machines offered a delightful array of Korean beverages. The entire atmosphere was captivating, and I couldn’t help but feel immersed in the vibrant Korean culture. We boarded the train and later switched to another train, or perhaps it was the metro, which took us to our first hotel in Seoul. The entire experience felt surreal, even the sounds and music that accompanied the arrival of trains or metros, reminiscent of something out of a Disneyland adventure. It was a captivating and unique sensation, making us even more excited for the adventures that awaited us in Seoul.

Getting around Seoul using the train and metro system was incredibly convenient and straightforward, offering a hassle-free way to travel between various destinations. However, it gave us a deeper appreciation for the sheer size of the city. Unlike Warsaw, where stops are just a couple of minutes apart and it takes around 50 minutes to traverse the city, Seoul’s metro network spans a vast distance with numerous lines crisscrossing the metropolis.

To ensure a smooth transition for our trip to Jeju Island the following morning, we opted to stay at a hotel conveniently located between the international and domestic airports. This strategic choice not only minimized travel time but also allowed us to explore a different area of Seoul while preparing for our journey. In my next post, I will delve into our experiences during our first evening and day in Seoul, as well as share insights about the hotel we stayed in.

Zanzibar airport

Let me give you a brief overview of what it’s like at Zanzibar Airport. Specifically, I’ll focus on Terminal 2, the older terminal we encountered during our travels.
Initially, we assumed that Terminal 2 was designated for domestic flights, but our flight to Kenya, an international destination, was departing from there. It seemed that Terminal 2 catered more to low-cost airlines. The aircraft we boarded with Precision Air was of a smaller size, but it did not diminish the overall experience. In fact, I found it comparable to the smaller planes operated by renowned airlines. However, the terminal itself differed significantly from the newer and more modern terminal we arrived at in Zanzibar.

Arriving at the airport two hours ahead of schedule, we joined a short queue to check in our luggage. Unfortunately, the system was experiencing issues, resulting in a prolonged wait. The heat made the wait even more uncomfortable, leaving us feeling sweaty and overheated. Finally, when it was our turn, we discovered the need to fill in forms for entry into Kenya before checking in our luggage. Keep this in mind if you’re traveling to Kenya. Passport control was efficient, and we soon found ourselves in a small, crowded area where all the gates were located. The space was limited and offered minimal activities or amenities. There was a tiny stall where a variety of spices and oils were being sold, a souvenir shop, a store selling coffee, a small café that permitted smoking, and stepping out of it meant leaving with the lingering scent of an ashtray, and a snack stall. However, the options were limited, and I would recommend eating beforehand or bringing your own food. Additionally, there was a paid airport lounge on the upper level, but we didn’t avail ourselves of it. Despite the apparent choices, everything felt compact and uninviting. While I had previously expressed dissatisfaction with some domestic airports in the Philippines, Terminal 2 in Zanzibar proved to be even more underwhelming. On a positive note, the bathroom facilities were satisfactory.

We passed the time sitting on uncomfortable airport chairs, eagerly awaiting our plane, which seemed to take an eternity. Adding to our frustration, our flight was noticeably absent from the monitors, giving the impression that it wasn’t scheduled for departure at all. This unexpected absence caused anxiety and led us to question whether we were in the correct terminal for our flight to Kenya. The lack of information was disconcerting. Despite repeatedly inquiring about the flight’s status, I was repeatedly reassured that there was no cause for concern and that the plane would arrive as scheduled. However, no one took the initiative to confirm the status. In a rather casual manner, the airport staff responded to our inquiry about the missing flight on the monitors by simply stating, “Oh, they must have forgotten to put it there,” as if such an omission was considered a regular occurrence. Finally, after more than an hour had passed since the intended departure time, I pressed the issue again, highlighting the delay. The staff appeared surprised and assured me that they would make a phone call, but it never transpired. Thankfully, the plane eventually arrived (we caught sight of it through the window), alleviating our worries.

Overall, be prepared for unexpected surprises at Terminal 2, although two hours proved to be more than sufficient time considering the limited amenities. On a positive note, Wi-Fi was available. It’s worth mentioning that Terminal Three, where we initially landed in Zanzibar, offered a significantly better experience with its newer and more modern facilities. It seemed like a stroke of bad luck that our flight departed from Terminal 2 specifically.
